October 25, 2022 – Today, at the Toronto Region Board of Trade, many of the Toronto region’s most influential policy makers, builders, housing providers, planners, advocates, and non-profits gathered for an announcement, which outlined the next phase of the Ontario government’s plan to build 1.5 million homes over the next decade.
Described by Premier Ford as a “great day for Ontario” the announcement comes ahead of legislation being tabled today at Queen’s Park.
The Board applauds the bold steps being taken to address the region’s affordability crisis. Of note, Minister Clark highlighted moves to eliminate exclusionary zoning by allowing the development of missing middle housing, increase transit-oriented development, and plans to streamline and accelerate approvals, which will save money and get more housing built.
These are all critical policy changes that have been part of the Board’s advocacy work over many years.
“After years of advocating for governments to hit go on housing solutions, we congratulate this government for taking action. As housing becomes less affordable, it became harder for our region’s businesses of all sizes to attract and retain the talent they need,” said Jan De Silva, President & CEO of the Toronto Region Board of Trade. “Today’s news includes solutions we’ve long been advocating for, like eliminating exclusionary zoning to allow missing middle housing in residential neighbourhoods.”
The Board is looking forward to reviewing the legislation in detail and participating in public consultations in the weeks and months ahead.
The Toronto Region Board of Trade is one of the largest and most influential business chambers in North America and is a catalyst for the region’s economic agenda. We pursue policy change to drive the growth and competitiveness of the Toronto region and facilitate market opportunities with programs, partnerships and connections to help our members succeed – domestically and internationally.
